Women’s Sweep-oar Squad 2010

Summer season:

Light nights, warm mornings and the ever so attractive rowing induced sun-tans are officially upon us. Shrewsbury Regatta, 15th/16th May officially marks the start of Pengwern BC summer calendar and the women’s squad will be competing almost every two weeks right through till mid-August.

Here are the events the women’s squad are aiming to attend:

  • ShrewsburyRegatta 15th & 16th May
  • Northwich Regatta 30th May
  • Bridgnorth Regatta 12th June
  • Ironbridge Regatta 26th & 27th June
  • Bewdley Regatta 24th & 25th July
  • Stourport Regatta 14th & 15th August

Training:

For the summer months the squad has been split down into fours. We currently have four active W4+ crews, three of which will be aiming to compete within the region. The training schedules for competitive crews are boat and coxswain dependant but will all be variations on this basic layout:

  • Tuesday nights 6.30pm
  • Thursday night 6.30pm
  • Saturday mornings 7.30am
  • Sunday mornings 9.00am

Crew members are encouraged to do ergo’s in their own time to maintain fitness. Non-competitive crews have the following training schedule:

  • Tuesday nights 6.30pm
  • Sunday mornings 9.00am

Winter Training

Whilst in the grasps of the winter months access to the river and at times the clubhouse has been difficult to say the least! We’ve had floods and ice flows and as a result of that we’ve lost at least 5 weekends worth of outings.

The plan for spring 2010 is to get as many sweep-oar women rowing at weekends as possible. We are currently aiming to get an eight and a four out on Saturday mornings at 7:30am along with two eights and a possible four on Sunday mornings at 9:00am. There is a mid-week ergo and weights session on Tuesday nights from 6:00-8:00pm where the whole squad will be preparing fitness and strength levels for the head season. Squad members are also encouraged to attend weekly club circuits on Thursday nights at 7:30pm as this will compliment the work done in the boat at weekends. The amount of training may increase as the nights get lighter and the big heads approach.

There are numerous head races taking place during February and March that the squad is aiming to take part in:

20th Feb – Runcorn/Worcester Head.

28th Feb – Trent Head.

13th Mar – WeHORR (Women’s Head of the River Race, Thames, London).

20th Mar – North of England Head (Chester).

The aim for the summer is to build on the established squad that trained throughout the head season. We are hoping to have numerous women’s sweep-oar crews attending local regattas which will be greatly helped with the completion of the new boat bay due April 2010. When the building work is complete the club will have a full compliment of boats and this means our other women’s eight – joy!

We are always looking for new members, so if you want to row and fancy getting involved take a look at the beginner’s course run by Dave Ewels. Once you’ve been taught the basics you will be passed on to the women’s squad where we will get you sorted into a crew. If you have rowed before and want to row at Pengwern get in touch with the club!

I’ll try to update this as often as possible, best wishes,

Doone.
