Bridgnorth regatta June 13th

Lots of juniors raced here: the J13s raced for the first time and performed beyond expectation in many cases. The sole win was Sam Shaw in J15 single sculls who beat Joe Holyoake also Pengwern in the final. Well done to both!

Ironbridge regatta June 27th and 28th

Over 30 Juniors from Pengwern raced at Ironbridge regatta. There was quite a stream running which made steering tricky and due to the narrowness of the river made it a challenging course to race. Most crews won through their first round which kept coaches and helpers on their toes throughout the two days! The sole win was Sam Whittaker and Ben Oliver who won novice double sculls.

Runcorn Junior regatta July 4th

This was a very long day for Alex Fenner and Howard Jeffs who raced the first event of the day at 9am and the penultimate event at about 5.30pm. Their J14 quad won one of their round robin races and would have been well in the mix if they had raced in J13 class. With Louis still recovering but able to cox Vishal (who made it J14) had his first taste of racing. Alex and Howard had an interesting time in their double but show a lot of promise. The girls all raced well - the J14s getting closer to some good opposition and the J13s looking good for only 6 months since they started. Joe Holyoake raced in his single but unfortunately his event was changed to knock-out and he lost to much more experienced opposition on their own water - a tough challenge.

Northwich Spring Head April 4th

2 wins for Pengwern juniors

Altogether 6 junior crews crews from Pengwern travelled to race at Northwich with 2 successes! Sam Shaw won the J15 single sculls having overtaken all of his opposition (with a much improved time on previous events) which shows that his hard work over the winter is paying off. The girls four (Nicola Parker, Emma Jefferys, Georgia Hall, Felicity Parker and cox Lucie Short) rowing as Women's novice won their event. This was the first Head race ever for Georgia but proves that there is some stamina there somewhere!

Two J15 boys double sculls competed and reversed their previous order of finishing - this should keep both crews on their toes for the regatta season. A J16 boys' four coached by Shona Tennyson-Collins raced in their first ever open competition and showed great detirmination for a first race. A girls J14 quad also in their first open race performed well although it seemed a long way for some of the crew!

All these crews are preparing now for our own regatta on May 9th and 10th and are hoping for more success on the shorter courses.

Shrewsbury School Invitation event
Sat Nov 29th

On a very cold foggy afternoon eleven juniors from the club raced on our own water against crews from Shrewsbury School. Nicola Parker kindly subbed in the RSSBC girls crew which was a girl short and helped them with her greater experience.

In the boys' crew Joe Holyoake and George Clayton had never raced before but enjoyed the challenge and backed up Chris Moss who stroked a very sensible race. They were joined by Felicity Parker who fitted in admirably. As a scratch crew they did exceptionally well and came close to beating the RSSBC J15 4+.

The girls J14 quad have only been rowing since September and had never completed the distance before. They were coxed by Sherie King who gave them the confidence from her coxing experience. Olivia Marshall stroked the boat with a nice steady rhythm backed up by Holly Linford at 3 who worked steadily throughout. Naomi Barton at 2 and Flossie Jones at bow sculled thoughtfully and were really sorting out some of the technical problems we've worked on. All of them will have learnt a lot from the day and should look forward to some good racing in the Summer.

Evesham Junior Head Oct 4th

This was a high quality event with an impressive entry of juniors (especially club squads) from all over the country. Conditions were very demanding with an extremely strong wind that caused difficulties for the younger and weaker scullers. Sam Shaw did well to come in the middle of the pack of J15 scullers where Harrison of Stoke showed excepional speed.

Sept 08 Update
Sam Shaw was the only Junior who took part in the club Head race on Sunday Sep 28th and raced extremely well finishing 6th out of 9 men scullers. (He also beat all the women scullers!) He steered an excellent course and surprised other competitors with his maturity and his stickability! It is the first time he has raced his single over that long a distance so it should give him lots of confidence for a good performance at Evesham next weekend. We wish him and Rob Coster and Chris Moss (J15 2x) all the best at the Evesham Junior head race next weekend.

Juniors at Worcester
9/9/07
It was a day of mixed fortunes for Pengwern juniors at Worcester on Saturday.

The boys J14 coxed quad had waited all summer to compete for the first time because of a lack of opposition in their J13 age group or because of the floods. They finally took to the water in a straight final against a much more experienced crew from Llandaff. They were well beaten but made a brave attempt urged on by their cox Rachael and a vociferous crowd of supporters on the bank. It was good experience for them and now we know what to work on for next season!

The girls fared much better in their two, well-subscribed events.

The double of 16 year olds Felicity Preece and Alice Windows, sculling as Novice women, beat crews from Llandaff and Ross by large margins before losing a hard fought final to Llandaff’s A crew.

Most successful Junior was Jess Knott who won the Women’s J16 single sculls beating two scullers from Gloucester and one from Wallingford on the way.

As usual, if there had been a cup for the loudest supporters group Pengwern would have won that hands down! Many thanks to all the Mums, Dads, (and little brother) for all their help.
